Police find dinghy and life jackets in dunes near zwin nature park
Police in the Damme/Knokke-Heist area were alerted by a member of the public on Wednesday morning after observing a suspicious scene in the dunes near the Zwin Nature Park. Upon investigation, they discovered the group of 28 migrants, who were found to be in possession of a dinghy, an outboard motor, and several life jackets.
It is believed the migrants intended to attempt the perilous crossing to the United Kingdom. This incident is part of a growing trend, with figures showing people smugglers increasingly turning to the Belgian coast due to stricter checks along the French border.
Last month, volunteers had to rescue 19 migrants from a sinking dinghy off the coast of De Haan, underscoring the dangers of these clandestine crossings. Only one of the migrants was wearing a life jacket.
As warmer weather approaches, authorities expect the number of attempts to rise further. The police are urging the public to continue reporting any suspicious activities.
