More than 1,000 toads may have perished after a strategically drained reservoir in North Wales, a move undertaken by Hafren Dyfrdwy Water Company, has triggered a crisis for the region’s delicate ecosystem.
Critical timing threatens breeding populations
Volunteers with the Wrexham Toad Patrols, who dedicate themselves to assisting the amphibians’ perilous journeys across busy roads, were left reeling upon discovering the reservoir’s sudden emptying over the Easter weekend – a mere weeks before the toads’ natural migration. The group expressed profound dismay, describing the situation as ‘shocking, angry, and heartbreaking.’
“Why now, at the height of spring, when wildlife depends on these waters for breeding, feeding, and nesting?” asked Teri Davies, a spokesperson, in a scathing social media post. “A few more weeks could have averted this catastrophe.”

A fragile ecosystem under siege
Nant-Y-Ffrith, a haven for diverse species including great crested grebes and coots, is profoundly impacted. Sedge warblers, reed buntings, lapwings, and curlews – all reliant on adjacent streams, fields, and the surrounding wooded valley – now face a significant reduction in their vital breeding and foraging grounds. Davies emphasized that toads consistently return to the same breeding sites year after year, exhibiting a remarkable fidelity to their ancestral locations.
“With the reservoir gone, their survival is now seriously jeopardized,” she stated. “The ripple effects extend far beyond the toads themselves; frogs, newts, insects, and even reported otters will all experience detrimental consequences within the entire ecosystem.”

Company response – a band-aid on a deep wound
Hafren Dyfrdwy, citing ‘essential safety improvements’ as justification for the draining operation, acknowledged the situation as ‘concerning for the local community.’ They assure a thorough review is underway, alongside ecologists on site, but the damage is already done and the timing, a point of intense criticism, remains deeply problematic. The company’s ‘current review’ feels woefully inadequate in the face of such a substantial ecological loss.
The decline of common toad populations in the UK has been documented at a staggering 41% over the past four decades, according to Froglife, a wildlife charity. This incident underscores the urgent need for a more considered approach to infrastructure development – a lesson, perhaps, not yet fully grasped.
