Austrian Broadcasters Warn Against ORF Expansion Amid Reform Talks
Austrian private broadcasters are voicing concerns regarding proposed reforms to the ORF, Austria’s public broadcaster, fearing an expansion into digital media. Corinna Drumm, managing director of the Association of Austrian Private Broadcasters (VÖP), emphasized the need to first clearly define the ORF’s public service remit, arguing against any changes that could displace private media in emerging digital markets.
ORF Reform Focus on Efficiency, Not Size
Drumm suggested a more targeted approach to the ORF’s digital offerings, potentially focusing on specific services rather than a broad, state-funded platform aimed at all under-30s. She also advocated for increased cooperation between the ORF and private media outlets, encompassing areas like technology, distribution, content, and licensing.

Forced Deportations Increase in Austria
Meanwhile, Austria reported a significant rise in forced deportations between January and July 2026, with 8,856 removals recorded – an 8 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The number of forced removals rose by approximately 20 percent, and family reunification applications saw a substantial decline, falling from 853 to just 60 during the first seven months of 2026. Austria is currently running a voluntary return program offering €3,000 to Syrian nationals and €1,500 to those returning voluntarily, particularly those facing exceptional hardship.
Military Helicopters Combat 17 Forest Fires
Austrian Armed Forces helicopters have been deployed to combat 17 forest fires across the country in 2026, a dramatic increase from just one deployment during the entirety of 2025. Since the beginning of the year, these aircraft have delivered over 3 million liters of extinguishing water, logging nearly 340 flight hours using models including the AW169 Lion, S-70 Black Hawk, and Agusta-Bell 212, operating from bases in Styria, Upper Austria, and Lower Austria. The military is also planning to equip two of its four new helicopters.
