One Dead, Multiple Injured In Fiery Genoa Township Crash

GENOA TOWNSHIP, IL – One person was killed and multiple others were injured in a three-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck on Wednesday in far northwest suburban Genoa Township, DeKalb County Sheriff's officials reported.

The Collision

The crash occurred shortly after noon at the intersection of Illinois Route 23 and Melms Road, involving a 2025 Mazda CX-5, a Mack semi-tractor trailer hauling gravel, and a 2013 Nissan Altima. The Mazda was engulfed in flames, and all three vehicles sustained significant damage.

Injuries and Fatalities

The driver and two passengers of the Mazda escaped the vehicle before it caught fire and were transported to a hospital with serious injuries. A 1-year-old passenger also received minor injuries and was hospitalized. The truck driver was hospitalized with moderate injuries. Tragically, the driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary Investigation

According to police, a preliminary investigation indicates the Mazda was stopped at a stop sign and entered the intersection in the path of the semi-truck, which was heading north on Route 23 and had the right of way. Following the initial impact, both the Mazda and the truck struck the Nissan, which was traveling south on Route 23. The driver of the Mazda was issued a ticket for failing to yield at a stop sign.
