Speeding Crackdown Kicks Off in Fort Worth, Targeting High-Risk Corridors

A new pilot program launched Saturday in Fort Worth aimed at dramatically reducing speeding incidents on key roadways, utilizing data-driven enforcement.

Increased Patrols Target Deadly Zones

The initiative, spearheaded by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) and the Fort Worth Police Department, will deploy heightened patrols along Loop 820 and Interstate 30 between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m., times statistically linked to the majority of serious crashes. This strategic focus follows an analysis identifying high-risk corridors – areas where speeds consistently exceeded 80 mph – combined with fatality records from 2025.

Alarmingly, excessive speed accounted for 34% of all serious and fatal crashes across the region’s highways last year. This isn’t simply about ticketing; it’s a calculated response to a tangible problem.

$57 Million Investment Fuels Safety Push

The program is funded through a $57 million regional transportation safety program, with $7 million specifically dedicated to combating speeding. Fort Worth is the first city to partner with NCTCOG on such a targeted effort, representing a potentially scalable model for other North Texas communities. Natalie Bettger, senior program manager for congestion management at NCTCOG, emphasized the proactive nature of the approach: "By working with the Fort Worth Police Department to increase enforcement along key corridors and when serious crashes are likeliest to happen, we’re taking a proactive approach to reducing speeding, preventing crashes, and ultimately saving lives."

Chief Eddie Garcia of the Fort Worth Police Department echoed this sentiment, stating, “This isn’t about revenue; it’s about protecting the public. We’re leveraging data to concentrate resources where they’ll have the greatest impact.” The program’s effectiveness will be rigorously evaluated after 90 days, with potential expansion to other North Texas cities contingent on positive results.
