Espn lands on disney+, expanding reach to 100 markets
Disney+ is injecting a serious dose of sports into its streaming lineup, launching ESPN across 53 countries and territories in Europe and select Asia-Pacific markets.
A massive expansion, but with a calculated start
The move, effective immediately, brings ESPN’s reach to approximately 100 markets worldwide, building on existing availability in Europe. While some live sports content has been accessible for some time, this represents a significant broadening of the platform’s sports offering. The initial rollout in Asia-Pacific – encompassing Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong – will feature a curated selection of English-language programming, a measured approach designed to establish a firm foothold.
Alisa Bowen, Disney’s President, emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership: “Sports and live events are an essential part of our Disney+ content library, and we’re excited to build on the success we’ve already had with sports fans, as we bring more of ESPN to Disney+ subscribers in Europe and APAC.” This isn't merely about adding content; it’s about solidifying Disney+'s position as a dominant force in the increasingly competitive streaming landscape – and bolstering local sports rights portfolios.

A year of live games and beyond
Expect a deluge of content over the coming year. We’re talking thousands of live events, including NBA and NHL coverage starting with the 2026-2027 season. Beyond the major leagues, the package includes college sports, the Little League World Series, and even the eccentric Savannah Bananas. 30 for 30 documentaries, films, and studio shows will also be integrated, offering a diverse range of sporting and cultural narratives.
Freddy Rolón, Head of ESPN’s Global Sports & Talent Office, succinctly put it: “ESPN has a longstanding tradition of delivering world-class content to sports fans, and the continued growth on Disney+ allows us to extend our reach and provide greater access and deeper connections with fans everywhere.” This expansion isn’t just about numbers; it’s about cultivating a deeper engagement with a global audience – a critical element for any streaming service.
