Greek meat prices stable ahead of easter despite foot-and-mouth outbreak

Despite initial concerns about potential price hikes, Greek meat prices remain relatively stable this Holy Week, according to the Butchers Association president Costas Livadiotis.

Foot-and-mouth disease controls halt price surge

Livadiotis attributed the stable prices to progress in controlling the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, which had briefly threatened to drive up costs.

Improved conditions have encouraged livestock farmers to sell their animals, leading to an increase in domestic supply, he explained.

However, challenges persist in transporting animals for slaughter due to disease restrictions. Livestock traders must delay collection for several days, as animals are not concentrated in a single location.

With just three days until Easter, slaughtering activity has intensified, with around 6,000 to 7,000 animals processed daily in recent days, said Livadiotis.
