Sweden acquires $180m tridon mk2 anti-aircraft gun system from bae systems

Sweden's Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has entered a $180 million deal with BAE Systems to procure the truck-mounted TRIDON Mk2 40mm anti-aircraft gun system. The contract, part of a comprehensive SEK 8.7 billion ($916 million) air and anti-drone defense package, strengthens Sweden's layered air defense capabilities with a mobile and cost-effective gun layer.

Tridon mk2: rapid reaction and high precision

The TRIDON Mk2 mounts a new Bofors 40mm gun on a mobile chassis, designed for rapid reaction and high precision. It fires programmable 3P airburst rounds at up to 300 rounds per minute, offering an effective engagement range of roughly 12 km against air and ground targets. The system can shoot on the move, either from the vehicle cabin or operate remotely when stationary, making it versatile for engaging swarms of drones, fast jets, cruise missiles, and even armored vehicles.

Sweden's 2025-2030 defense plan prioritizes bolstering short-range and counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) capabilities. This $180 million TRIDON order follows an earlier February 2026 FMV purchase of Tridon systems donated to Ukraine, underscoring the system's relevance in current conflicts. Defence Minister Pål Jonson noted that the wider 8.7 billion SEK procurement, including BAE and Saab systems, will better protect Swedish cities, infrastructure, and forces from drone and missile attacks.
