Us trade rep eyes china board amid trump-xi talks

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has floated the idea of a US-China board of trade, signaling potential progress in upcoming talks between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

Trade talks on the horizon

Greer made the proposal during an event at the Hudson Institute in Washington, where he downplayed the likelihood of a similar body focused on bilateral investment. The creation of a trade board was discussed in recent talks in Paris involving Greer, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and China's Vice Premier He Lifeng.

The Paris meeting aimed to set the stage for the Trump-Xi summit, initially slated for March 31-April 2 but delayed after the Iran conflict erupted in late February. Trump now plans to visit Beijing from May 14-15.

While investment-related issues typically fall under the purview of the US Treasury Department, Greer suggested the focus for now should be on trade.
