Miami Bartender Assaulted; Texas Man Arrested on Battery Charges
A seemingly minor dispute over drink garnishes escalated into a violent altercation Sunday night at the Bayside Marketplace in Miami, leaving a 21-year-old bartender with a broken tooth and a concussion. Daniel Ramirez, a 47-year-old man from Lubbock, Texas, has been arrested and charged with felony battery in connection with the incident.
Surveillance Captures the Initial Confrontation
Surveillance footage obtained by CBS News Miami reportedly shows Ramirez pushing Nicky, the bartender, to the ground. According to Nicky, who requested to be identified only by her first name, the incident occurred after she asked Ramirez to cease picking through the garnishes of drinks. She stated he was accompanied by his wife and other family members at the Hard Rock Cafe.
The injuries, initially believed to be minor, have proven more severe. Nicky, speaking to CBS News Miami via telephone just before a dental appointment, revealed she was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome and is experiencing persistent headaches, shoulder pain, and a pervasive sense of anxiety. “I was told I have post-concussion syndrome, and I am very shaken up from this situation,” she said, adding, “My shoulder aches and my head hurts every day, all day. This overall sense of anxiety follows me every day, every single day, and there is a hole in my chest.”
She expressed gratitude towards the investigating detective and relief at Ramirez’s arrest, fearing he might have fled back to Texas. The Hard Rock Cafe released a statement affirming their support for the employee and their cooperation with law enforcement, emphasizing their commitment to the safety and well-being of both staff and patrons.
Nicky, a senior at Florida International University studying computer science with aspirations of joining the U.S. Justice Department, indicated she is unlikely to return to her bartending job. The incident has left her questioning the safety of her workplace and grappling with the emotional aftermath of the assault. The Miami Police Department has not yet released further details regarding Ramirez’s arrest or bond court appearance.
