Colorado's march: a heatwave shattering records, threatening water
Colorado endured a March unlike any other in its recorded history, a month so anomalously warm it’s rewriting climate benchmarks and raising alarms about the state’s water future. The Colorado Climate Center at CSU in Fort Collins has released a stark map illustrating the extent of the heat – a visual testament to a month that’s left experts scrambling to understand its implications.
Unprecedented temperature spikes across the state
Allie Mazurek, the Climate Center’s engagement climatologist, described the situation with a bluntness that underscores its severity: “The March heat we saw was truly like nothing we’ve ever seen in our period of record in Colorado.” The record-breaking wasn't a singular event, but a sustained assault on historical data. Some locations, Mazurek noted, shattered previous March records five, six, even seven times. In Fort Collins, the peak temperature exceeded the previous record high for April, a chilling indicator of the scale of the anomaly.
The data, stretching back to 1895, paints a sobering picture. Experts estimate that this past March was a staggering 3 to 4 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than any previous March in that 132-year period. While attributing individual events directly to climate change remains a complex scientific challenge, the sheer magnitude of the warming has prompted serious discussion about the role of a changing climate.

Snowpack dwindles, fire danger rises
The immediate consequence of this heatwave is a rapidly diminishing snowpack—a vital resource for Colorado’s water supply and recreation industries. Typically, snowpack reaches its peak around April 7. This year, however, “we’re seeing the kind of melt-off of the snowpack that we typically wouldn't see until May,” Mazurek explained. The statewide snowpack currently stands at a dismal 22%, with a staggering 89 out of 94 measuring stations reporting record-low levels. This translates to heightened fire danger and a drastically reduced water supply as the state moves into the drier months.
The situation demands a sober assessment. While a slight uptick in April moisture offers a glimmer of hope, Mazurek is cautious. “We’re so far in the hole, you know, odds of making up major, major progress at this stage are very low.” The long-term implications of this March’s extreme warmth remain to be seen, but the immediate impact on Colorado’s resources is undeniable, a stark reminder of the escalating challenges posed by a warming planet.
