Southern california hit by swarm of earthquakes

A series of powerful earthquakes shook Southern California's Imperial County on Saturday, leaving residents on edge. The largest of the temblors registered at a magnitude of 4.5, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The seismic activity began around 4:15 p.m. and continued intermittently until nearly 8 p.m. local time. The epicenter was located approximately 2.5 miles northwest of the city of Brawley, situated near the Salton Sea, about 130 miles east of San Diego.

Sixteen of the quakes measured above magnitude 2.5, with the majority registering in the 2.0 to 4.0 range. The USGS reported that the largest earthquakes struck about a mile northwest of Brawley, with the 4.5-magnitude quake occurring around 7:20 p.m.

While no major damage or injuries were immediately reported, the swarm has left residents on high alert given the region's history of significant seismic activity. Officials are urging caution and encouraging people to prepare for potential future earthquakes.
