Secret service cracks down on tarrant county card skimming ring
A two-day blitz by the U.S. Secret Service has netted over 500 fraudulent card skimmers targeting stores and gas pumps across Tarrant County, exposing a sophisticated operation potentially bleeding taxpayers dry.
Millions at risk: skimmers seized, vulnerable consumers targeted
The operation, dubbed ‘ORION,’ focused on businesses predominantly servicing Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cardholders – individuals already grappling with limited resources. Authorities estimate the illicit activity could have cost taxpayers over $570 million annually, a staggering figure considering the average benefit recipient receives between $1,000 and $3,000 monthly.
Agents meticulously inspected more than 1,500 cash registers, ATMs, and gas pumps, deploying 10 specialized teams. The sheer scale of the effort – inspecting over 200 retail locations and 400 gas pump sites – underscores the depth of the problem. It’s a chilling reminder that even seemingly innocuous devices can become instruments of sophisticated theft.

Unmasking the threat: business owners wake up
What’s particularly concerning is the almost complete lack of awareness among business owners. Abdul Mohammed, owner of a local store visited by the Secret Service, admitted, ‘We didn’t know how they do it, but he’s explaining to me, and we’re going to be careful from now on.’ The Secret Service emphasizes that these devices – essentially miniature, low-cost counterfeiting operations – can generate upwards of $1 million for perpetrators.
Corey Graves, from the Dallas Field Office, stated bluntly: ‘Just to do this outreach program because we’re again going out and we’re visually inspecting.’ This isn’t simply reactive enforcement; it's a proactive attempt to disrupt a network built on exploiting the most vulnerable. The agency’s nationwide initiative has already confiscated more than 500 of these devices.
The targeting of EBT recipients isn’t a coincidence. It's a deliberate exploitation of a system designed to provide critical assistance, effectively robbing those who need it most. The numbers are damning: the potential for financial devastation is immense.
The Secret Service isn’t offering platitudes; they’re delivering a stark assessment: this isn’t just a statistical anomaly—it’s a systematic drain on taxpayer resources and a profound betrayal of those relying on vital support.
