Key west man arrested for dui after crashing e-bike

In a shocking incident, a 53-year-old man from Key West, Florida, was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) after a collision with a tricycle, authorities said.

Key witness claims rider appeared drunk

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the crash occurred around 10:26 p.m. on Wednesday near South College Road and U.S. 1 in Key West. The victim, who was riding a tricycle, told deputies that the suspect, identified as Christian Everett Madrid, ran into him while appearing intoxicated.

Deputies responded to the scene, where they found Madrid struggling to perform field sobriety exercises. He was subsequently taken into custody for DUI and drug-related charges.

While being booked into jail, authorities discovered three marijuana cigarettes in Madrid's possession, leading to an additional charge of smuggling contraband into a detention facility.

Madrid now faces a potential first-time DUI conviction in Florida, which can carry penalties including fines up to $1,000, six months in jail, probation, and mandatory substance abuse education.

As the incident highlights, even electric bicycles are subject to Florida's DUI laws, given the potential for impairment while operating any vehicle.
