Abigail Mason, 29, of Cicero, was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash after police tracked her down and she acknowledged hitting an object she believed was a dog, police said.

Juan and Claudia Villagomez were crossing Harlem Avenue from the Krash bar, 7112 S. Harlem Ave., to the east side of the street around 1:35 a.m. Sunday when Mason's red Chevrolet Impala struck Juan Villagomez in the median lane of southbound Harlem Avenue.

Villagomez was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died from his injuries. Mason was arrested at the scene.

The incident highlights the dangers of hit-and-run accidents and the importance of drivers stopping to help those in need, even if they believe they've only injured an animal.
