Berlin intensifies crackdown on gun crime – new unit and asset seizures fuel strategy

Berlin’s public prosecutor’s office is ratcheting up its fight against escalating gun violence, deploying specialized investigative teams and aggressively targeting organized crime’s illicit financial networks.

Incoming head Ingrid Jaeger is prioritizing a decisive response to the surge in shootings targeting criminal figures, dismissing a reactive approach as insufficient. “We don’t come after the crime,” she stated bluntly, “we come after the perpetrators.”

The initiative centers around two newly formed units: ‘Ferrum,’ a state-level police task force focused on resource pooling and rapid deployment, and ‘Telum,’ a dedicated prosecutor’s group specializing in organized crime investigations. The sheer scale of the prosecutor’s office – six specialized departments – allows for immediate strategic prioritization, a crucial advantage in this dynamic environment.

Recent incidents, including the arson of prison staff vehicles – resulting in prison sentences for multiple defendants – underscore the office’s resolve. These actions, Jaeger emphasized, send a clear message: “Offenders must know that we will not allow any attempts to prevent people from doing their jobs through violence or threats.”

But the reality on the ground is far from simple. While the prosecutor’s office boasts considerable success in seizing assets derived from criminal activities – recently netting €21.8 million in revenue – Jaeger acknowledges the inherent frustration of protracted investigations. “Prosecutors, particularly in this field, must have a ‘high tolerance for frustration,’” she conceded. “It’s a long game, and you have to keep your successes in mind to stay motivated.”

The focus extends beyond individual crimes, targeting the underlying structures of organized crime. Raids on meeting points and bars are intended to dismantle networks involved in extortion and turf wars. The aim is not merely to apprehend criminals, but to dismantle the entire ecosystem of illegal activity.

“You won’t get away with that,” Jaeger warned, her tone leaving no room for ambiguity. The message is stark: Berlin’s authorities are determined to exert control and prevent the city from descending further into chaos.
