Robinson admits to misleading voters about racist comments

Former North Carolina state senator Mark Robinson confessed Thursday he deliberately misled voters during his 2024 gubernatorial campaign, admitting to concealing the existence of racist and offensive comments posted on a pornography website. The revelation casts a shadow over Robinson’s political aspirations and raises questions about the integrity of his campaign.

Speaking on the “After the Call” podcast, Robinson acknowledged he hadn’t been entirely truthful, stating “some of the things about the whole story — some of it — there’s some truth to it.” This admission follows a CNN report in September 2024 detailing Robinson’s pseudonym use on Nude Africa, where he allegedly expressed support for slavery and made disparaging remarks about Martin Luther King Jr.

The Washington Post corroborated CNN’s findings, reporting Robinson’s use of homophobic and antisemitic slurs, including a self-identification as “a black NAZI.” He also reportedly praised Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf,” describing it as “very informative.”

Robinson initially denied authorship of the comments, a denial that quickly unravelled, prompting key campaign staff to depart and even leading to a distancing from former ally Donald Trump. Trump, who previously lauded Robinson as a “great star of the Republican party,” now maintains distance.

“Let me reassure you: the things that you will see in that story, those are not the words of Mark Robinson,” Robinson said in a video posted to X, a statement now rendered moot by his podcast confession. He further revealed an “obsession” with pornography and sex, claiming he concealed the online activity to protect those around him, particularly Trump, believing it was “the most expedient thing to do.”

Asked if he would repeat the deception, Robinson affirmed he would, stating his decision was not about personal gain but about preventing damage to others. “They knew that they could use me to destroy, the people around me, up to and including the president, they would do it. And so I’d make the exact same decision,” he conceded. The race ultimately ended with Democrat Josh Stein winning by 14 points in November 2024.

The fallout from this revelation underscores the high stakes of political maneuvering and the willingness to sacrifice truth for perceived strategic advantage. Robinson's choice to prioritize political expediency over honesty is a gamble that appears to have cost him dearly.
