A growing crisis: recruitment and manipulation

Yaoundé has confirmed the deaths of 16 Cameroonian soldiers operating within the Ukrainian special military zone, a grim testament to the escalating involvement of African citizens in this protracted conflict. The memo, addressed to the Russian embassy, also flagged ‘urgent matters’ concerning six other Cameroonian nationals residing in Russia – details remain shrouded in opaque ambiguity.

This latest revelation follows a year of heightened concern within cameroon, where the defenseminister, in March 2023, issued ‘strict emergency measures’ to combat defections amongst its armed forces. The underlying issue? Reports indicate over 1,700 Africans have been recruited, often lured by false promises of lucrative employment and specialized training – a strategy repeatedly employed across the continent.

Beyond the battlefield: drone production

Intelligence assessments paint an even more unsettling picture. Kenya, for instance, saw 1,000 citizens tricked into joining the Russian cause, initially presented with deceptive job opportunities before being deployed to the front lines. And tragically, two Nigerian soldiers perished late last year whilst serving in Ukraine – a stark illustration of the devastating human cost of this exploitation.

But the deception doesn’t end with combat roles. An AP investigation published earlier this year exposed a darker facet of the Russian war machine: hundreds of African women, primarily from Nigeria and cameroon, were systematically recruited and deployed to a factory in Russia, tasked with assembling attack drones destined for Ukraine. These women, presented with social media advertisements promising work-study programs, were lured into a deceptive scheme. The scale of this operation is deeply concerning, representing a new and alarming dimension to the conflict.
