Australia claims bronze at world athletics indoor championships in poland

Poland delivered a thrilling day at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, with Australia securing a bronze medal in the women's 3,000m and further successes in pole vault and the 800m. The team now looks to a potential medal haul on the final day.

Hull's tumultuous race leads to bronze

Jess Hull of Australia earned a bronze medal in the women’s 3,000m, a race marred by controversy. In a congested 15-lap event, Hull inadvertently pushed Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu while battling for position, a move that saw Spain’s Marta Garcia disqualified for a similar infraction. The incident allowed Hull to finish third, behind Italy’s Nadia Battocletti, who claimed gold, and American Emily Mackay, who took silver.

“I am just proud to add another medal to my collection. If there’s a race for medals anywhere in the world, I will be there!” Hull stated after the race. She admitted to needing to refine her tactical approach indoors, acknowledging the differences from outdoor racing.

Meanwhile, pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall added another bronze to his collection, clearing 6.00m – a height he first achieved just last month. He joins a select group of four Australians to clear the six-meter mark in championship competition. However, Sweden’s Armand Duplantis continued his dominance, setting a championship record of 6.25m, despite a valiant effort from Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis.

The day wasn't without other Australian highlights. Peter Bol secured a hard-fought bronze in the men’s 800m, returning to form after a period sidelined by a doping suspension. His 1:46.21 finish demonstrated his renewed strength. Hayley Kitching also qualified for her first global final in the women’s 800m, finishing her semi-race in 2:00.06.

The atmosphere was electric, and the performances underscore Australia’s growing strength in indoor track and field. The team will be aiming for further medals on Sunday, with Bol and Kitching leading the charge.
