Benedek brings a concise resume to the role. After a successful playing career at Elizabeth Forward High School, where he earned back-to-back conference titles in 2017 and 2018, Benedek honed his skills at Saint Francis and Clarion University. He also began his coaching journey as a tight end coach at Clarion before transitioning to Mt. Lebanon, most recently serving as passing game coordinator and quarterback coach.

The move comes as several WPIAL schools make coaching changes. Bob Palko's return to West Allegheny, where he amassed eight WPIAL titles and a state championship, is among the most prominent moves this offseason.

Benedek isn’t alone in this shift. He’s one of two 25-year-old head coaches in the WPIAL, joining Dustin Shoaf at Southmoreland. The two former rivals have a history, famously trading milestones during a game last October: Benedek surpassed 1,000 rushing yards, while Shoaf broke the 5,000-yard career mark.

The hiring of Benedek represents a fresh perspective for Mars Area, a program looking to regain its footing in a competitive league. His youth, coupled with his recent experience, offers a compelling combination for the school’s athletic department. The Cranberry Eagle reported that Benedek had been contemplating stepping into a head coaching role for some time.

This coaching carousel underscores the constant evolution of high school football in Pennsylvania. The decisions made now will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of several programs for years to come.
