Espn lands on disney+, expanding sports reach across europe and asia

Disney+ and ESPN are dramatically reshaping the sports landscape, launching ESPN’s streaming presence in 53 countries across Europe and select asia-Pacific markets. The move represents a significant strategic play, bolstering Disney+'s content library and targeting a massive, untapped audience.

A new chapter for global sports access

Initially, the rollout will focus on Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, offering a curated selection of English-language ESPN sports programming – a critical first step. Subscribers in these key markets will now have access to a vastly expanded portfolio of live events, studio shows, and exclusive content alongside Disney+'s existing offerings.

But the ambition doesn’t stop there. Over the next year, ESPN aims to deliver thousands of live events, including the NBA and NHL seasons starting in 2026-27, NCAA championships – March Madness, college basketball, and football – and a host of international competitions like the Little League World Series and Savannah Bananas events. It’s a massive investment in sports rights, strategically positioned to drive Disney+ subscriber growth.

Beyond the initial offering

Beyond the initial offering

Don’t mistake this for a simple expansion; Disney is layering on a wealth of existing content. European subscribers already enjoy access to UEFA Women’s Champions League, LALIGA in the UK and Ireland, and key European tournaments. APAC markets will be treated to KeSPA’s Esports Championships asia Jinju 2026 and the LoL KeSPA Cup – a clear signal of Disney’s commitment to the burgeoning world of competitive gaming.

A measured, strategic approach

“Sports and live events are an essential part of our Disney+ content library,” says Alisa Bowen, President of Disney. “We’re excited to build on the success we’ve already had with sports fans, as we bring more of ESPN to Disney+ subscribers in Europe and APAC.” Freddy Rolón, Head of Global Sports and Talent Office at ESPN, echoes this sentiment, highlighting the platform’s “longstanding tradition of delivering world-class content.”

This isn’t just about adding more channels; it's about deepening engagement with a global fanbase. The initial rollout demonstrates a measured approach, prioritizing key markets before scaling up. The sheer scope of the expansion – encompassing potentially thousands of events – underscores the magnitude of Disney and ESPN’s commitment. The bottom line? ESPN on Disney+ is no longer a future possibility; it’s a present reality, fundamentally altering the way sports fans consume their favorite content.
