Overnight polish express: a surprisingly comfortable journey through germany
Forget the hassle of airports and hotel stays – a new overnight train service is transforming Travel between Amsterdam and Berlin. But is the European Sleeper truly a game-changer?
A retro route, a modern ride
The European Sleeper, a project reviving the romantic notion of trans-European rail Travel, offers a seven-hour journey between the Netherlands and Germany. Departing Amsterdam at 10:34 PM, it’s a chance to clock up serious sightseeing time while catching some Zs – and avoiding the usual Travel headaches.

Cozy compartments, unexpected amenities
Boarding the ES 453 in Amsterdam’s ornate Centraal station felt delightfully old-school. My ‘single’ compartment, a surprising upgrade from the standard five- or six-bed couchettes (€159 supplement), was a surprisingly spacious haven – a refurbished 1955 Belgian carriage boasting a proper bed, table and even a mini-bathroom. A single power outlet proved a minor inconvenience, but the pastel decor and overall cleanliness were genuinely pleasant.
A budget-friendly option
Prices start from €269.99 without a Eurail pass, scaling down to €139.99 for shared compartments. Considered against the cost of flights and hotels, it’s a compelling proposition, especially if you're already possessing a Eurail pass. Don’t forget to check Berlin Ostbahnhof – a mere 12 minutes from the main station – for a more convenient arrival.
Fueling the journey
Breakfast is included, a cardboard box brimming with sweet treats – orange juice, Nutella, and a solitary bread roll. While a decent start, it’s noticeably pricier than grabbing a coffee at a Berlin station outlet. Drinks are available, ranging from Belgian beer to French and Spanish wines, but speed is key; catering stops at 11 PM. A €3.50 bag of nuts and a €5.50 plate of noodles offer basic sustenance.
The verdict
The European Sleeper represents a welcome revival of long-distance rail Travel and offers a remarkably comfortable experience. It’s a smart alternative to flying, providing a relaxed and scenic route between two major European cities. A solid four-star rating and a significant step forward for sustainable Travel.
